Crime and Punishment | Part-3

What is justice? A courtroom, a prison, or the courage of a society to protect the innocent? Every society fears criminal. Very few fear something far more dangerous: the day crime stops shocking us. That is where civilizations begin to collapse. Dostoevsky never asked us to understand murder. He asked us to understand what kind of society allows a human soul to decay. Because no crime is ever committed in isolation. Before every act of violence, there is a quiet failure: the failure to see another human being as fully human. This is the real tragedy of Crime and Punishment. Not the murder; the slow erosion of compassion.

আজ যখন বারবার নারী-শিশুদের বিরুদ্ধে নৃশংস সহিংসতার খবর আমাদের কানে আসে যখন একটি শহর প্রতিবাদে রাস্তায় নামে মানুষ ন্যায়বিচারের অপেক্ষায় দিন গোনে ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তেই দস্তয়েভস্কির প্রশ্নের relevance বোঝা যায়।

শাস্তি কি শুধুই অপরাধীর জন্য? নাকি প্রত্যেকটি নৃশংস ধর্ষণ-হত্যা সমাজের ব্যর্থতার সাক্ষ্য?

যদি একটি দ্বাদশ বর্ষীয় শিশু নিরাপদ না থাকে তবে উন্নয়নের ভাষণ just মূল্যহীন। যদি ধর্ষণের মতো নৃশংস ঘটনার ন্যায়বিচার দীর্ঘ অপেক্ষার বিষয় হয়ে দাঁড়ায় তবে সামাজিক বিবেককে আগে কাঠগড়ায় দাঁড়াতে হয়।

City of Joy পরিণত হয় City of ভয়-এ। কারণ আজ একটি শিশুকন্যা নিরাপত্তা নয় ভয়কে উত্তরাধিকার হিসেবে পায়। একটি সভ্যতার আসল পরিচয় তার ক্ষমতায় নয় বরং তার সবচেয়ে দুর্বল মানুষটির নিরাপত্তা মর্যাদা এবং ন্যায়বিচারের প্রতি অঙ্গীকার।
